Perhaps the most famous architect to design homes in Tucson was Josias Joesler who came to Tucson during the pre-World War II era of prolific development in Tucson. His homes, establish a sense of place and of history. He is known for introducing an eclectic use of architectural styles to tie the imagery of the southwest to the evolving elegance of the new Tucson elite residences. There are many examples of his work in and around Tucson. In the forties and fifties Tucson saw the rise of bungalows and craftsman style duplexes and homes. Built in the days before air-conditioning, many have cellars or craw spaces under the floor where air cooled by the night could be drawn through grates into the home by using an attic exhaust fan. Polished concrete was often used for floors in the better homes. There are still a few homes that were built in the 19th century
